Staying in Baymeadows: A Southside Jacksonville Guide

If you're booking a trip to Jacksonville and you keep landing on hotels in "Baymeadows" or "the Southside," here's the plain-English version of what that means and whether it's the right base for you.

Baymeadows is a neighborhood on Jacksonville's Southside, built around Baymeadows Road just west of Interstate 95. It isn't a tourist district, and that's rather the point. It's where a lot of Jacksonville actually lives and eats — which is why the food is good, the parking is free, and the room rates are friendlier than what you'll pay at the beach or downtown. What it gives up in postcard scenery it makes back in location: you're roughly ten minutes from the region's biggest shopping and dining center, a straight shot east to the ocean, and a quick run north to the stadium and downtown.

What makes the Southside worth basing yourself here

Jacksonville is enormous — geographically the largest city by area in the contiguous United States — so where you stay changes your trip more than it would in a compact city. Pick the beach and you're 40 minutes from downtown. Pick downtown and you're a long haul from the shopping and the good weeknight restaurants. The Southside sits in the middle of the things most visitors actually do.

The anchor is the Butler Boulevard corridor. Butler (you'll also see it as J. Turner Butler or SR-202) is the expressway that connects I-95 to the Atlantic, and the Baymeadows area sits right at its western end. That one road is why this location works: it's the fast lane to the beaches in one direction and downtown in the other, with St. Johns Town Center right off it.

When to visit

Northeast Florida is a year-round destination, but the seasons matter more than people expect.

Spring (March–May) is the sweet spot: warm, dry, and comfortable, with the beaches pleasant before the summer crowds and humidity arrive. Fall (October–November) is nearly as good and lines up with Jaguars football season, which fills hotels on home-game weekends.

Summer (June–September) is hot and humid, with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms that roll through fast and clear out by evening — plan outdoor time for mornings. It's also peak beach season, so weekends near the ocean get busy. Winter (December–February) is mild and quiet; you'll want a jacket for the evenings but rarely more than that, and it's the easiest time to find a good rate.

Getting here and getting around

Most visitors arrive at Jacksonville International Airport (JAX), about 20 miles and 25–30 minutes north up I-95. If you're driving in, I-95 runs right past the Baymeadows exits, and the beltway that loops the city gives you a way around downtown if traffic is backed up.

Once you're here, you're driving. This is a car-first city and the Southside is no exception — there's no meaningful transit for visitors, but there's also almost always free parking, and the grid of Baymeadows Road, Southside Boulevard, and Butler makes it easy to get around. Rough drive times from the Baymeadows area:

• St. Johns Town Center: ~10 minutes north on I-95
• Downtown Jacksonville / the stadium: ~15 minutes (about 8 miles)
• Jacksonville Beach / Ponte Vedra: ~20–25 minutes east on Butler Blvd
• St. Augustine: ~45 minutes south on I-95

Where to stay

What to do

The Southside is more about doing than sightseeing, but there's plenty within reach. St. Johns Town Center is the obvious first stop — an open-air center with 175-plus stores, a deep bench of restaurants, and a movie theater, and it's ten minutes away. Downtown, the Museum of Science & History (MOSH) on the Southbank Riverwalk is the reliable rainy-day-or-with-kids pick, and the Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens in Riverside pairs a serious art collection with riverfront gardens.

Where to eat

This is where Baymeadows quietly overdelivers. The stretch of Baymeadows Road and Old Baymeadows Road near the hotel is one of the better casual-dining clusters in the city, precisely because it feeds locals rather than tourists. Within a couple of miles you've got a Jacksonville-born diner, an authentic Lebanese kitchen, a Travelers' Choice pho spot, and a family-run Greek restaurant — plus everything at the Town Center when you want a nicer night out. Nearby neighborhoods worth a detour

If you've got time beyond the Town Center and the beach, two Jacksonville neighborhoods reward a short drive. San Marco, about ten minutes north, is a walkable historic square of independent shops, restaurants, and a restored 1938 theater — the closest thing the Southside has to a stroll-and-browse district. Riverside/Avondale, a little farther across the river, pairs early-20th-century architecture and oak-lined streets with the Cummer Museum, boutiques, and some of the city's most interesting restaurants. Neither is a "sight" exactly; they're places to spend an easy couple of hours and get a feel for Jacksonville beyond the highways.

A note for business travelers

A lot of Southside stays are for work, not vacation, and Baymeadows is built for it. The Deerwood and Southpoint office parks are minutes away, the Town Center gives you somewhere civilized for a client dinner, and the airport is a straight 25-minute shot up I-95 for an early flight. The all-suite layout helps here too: a separate living area means you can take a call or spread out paperwork without working from the edge of the bed, and the in-suite fridge and microwave make a multi-night stay feel less like living out of a cooler. What to skip, and a couple of first-timer notes

A few things worth knowing before you come:

• Don't overbook the beach if you're not staying there. It's a genuinely easy drive, but plan a beach day as a day, not a quick pop-over — parking and the drive back through beach traffic on a summer weekend add up.
• Don't expect to walk between places. Distances that look short on a map are car distances here. Embrace it; the parking is free.
• Don't skip the local restaurants for the chains. The chains are all here, but the Baymeadows independents are the reason to stay in this neighborhood specifically.
• Give downtown events a traffic buffer. Jaguars games and concerts at Daily's Place are a short drive, but budget extra time for parking and getting out afterward.

The short version: Baymeadows won't wow you from the highway, but as a base for a Jacksonville trip it's central, comfortable, and good value — close to the shopping, a straight shot to the sand, and surrounded by some of the city's better everyday restaurants.
